Title: Gender Diversity in Mining 2020
Understanding the numbers, research, policies and bold industry action required for gender equity in mining
Technological, demographic, policy and cultural shifts are rapidly evolving the employment landscape in Canada and Canadian mining employers are able to harness the benefits of a diverse workforce like never before. Despite this, underrepresentation and underutilization of women in mining continues to characterize the industry.
In this presentation, we will look at national and regional labour data to get a handle on the current employment numbers and review critical gender research that helps us understand the gendered employment barriers and why the gender gap in mining persists. We will discuss how a more robust definition of ‘diversity’ is needed within mining workforce research and how engaging leadership in advocacy is central to creating more diverse mining workplaces. Lastly, we will discuss the research, and policies that are most promising and where we should focus our collective efforts in 2020.
